About us

Schäfer Kunststofftechnik GmbH is a medium-sized, owner-managed company based in Ortenberg (Baden). For over 60 years, we have been developing high-quality plastic solutions such as components, assemblies, and finished products made from acrylic glass, polycarbonate, and engineering plastics. As a system partner, we provide comprehensive support for projects—from the initial concept through design, engineering, and prototyping to series production. Our customers come from the mechanical engineering, medical technology, pharmaceutical, automation, and design and lighting sectors.

Our company is backed by approximately 90 employees with extensive expertise in plastics processing, as well as a highly digitized machine park. As plastics processors, we are under particular scrutiny when it comes to sustainability—and rightly so: plastic is a high-performance material, but one that also carries a special environmental responsibility.

Our carbon footprint: Between 2019 and 2021, we were able to reduce our operational emissions by approximately 47%—an impressive achievement that motivates us to continue on this path.

In addition to environmental measures, we are also deeply committed to the social and societal dimensions of sustainability. We create fair and safe working conditions, promote professional development, and invest in long-term growth.

At the same time, we are structuring our supply chain responsibly, taking into account environmental, social, and operational criteria. In addition, we are participating in the research project “RegioFab – Regional Factory Sharing for Greater Sustainability and Resilience in SMEs” in collaboration with Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences. The goal is to better network production resources, optimize capacity utilization, and promote sustainable value-creation structures among companies.

We are convinced that economic success and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. That is why we focus on sustainable innovation, evidence-based decisions, and collaborative partnerships—to ensure a sustainable future for the plastics processing industry.

Carbon accounting

The CO₂e footprint includes all climate-relevant emissions. This allows us to see where the greatest leverage lies and where we need to improve. In individual cases emissions may increase due to structural changes, for example in the calculation methodology, in the scope categories considered, in the emission factors according to the GHG Protocol, or due to company growth.

The path to CO2e reduction

Implemented measures
2025
  • Use of a GreenJet water-saving nozzle in production to reduce water consumption by approximately 38% (2024–2025).
  • Switch to electronic invoices to reduce paper consumption and promote a paperless office.
  • Introduction of tablets in production for digital order processing and to reduce paper-based production documents.
2024
  • Use of new compressors equipped with a centralized, consumption-based, self-regulating, and optimized control system.
  • Purchase of a new large-scale electric furnace for plastic forming, powered by self-generated renewable energy instead of fossil-fuel-based process energy.
2023
  • Installation of 3 heat pumps for departmental cooling.
  • Installation of 6 electric vehicle charging stations with 12 charging points, 8 of which comply with calibration regulations.
  • Conversion of 13 company vehicles to electric drive.
  • Introduction of a consumption-based negative pressure extraction system, which saves approximately 100,000 kWh of electricity annually.
  • Installation of a new 330 kWp PV system on the company building, achieving a self-sufficiency rate of approximately 25%.
Planned & ongoing measures
2026
  • Implementation of a comprehensive energy monitoring system to track efficiency.
  • Introduction of a new building management system (BMS) with demand-optimized consumption control and CO₂ sensors.
  • Development of a transformation plan and a decarbonization strategy in collaboration with external service providers.
  • Installation of a domestic hot water heat pump to reduce fossil fuel use outside the heating season.
  • Planning of an in-house industrial battery storage system, integrated with an AI-supported EMS (energy management system)

Support for climate protection projects

Financing climate protection projects is an effective tool in taking responsibility for climate protection. After avoidance and reduction, it can be used to offset emissions that cannot yet be avoided, while at the same time creating positive social and ecological effects.

Further Commitment

We are actively involved in our local community through our tree sponsorship program in the Ortenberg community forest.

“Our commitment to environmental protection is deeply rooted in our corporate philosophy. Every step we take to reduce our emissions reflects our responsibility toward future generations. By implementing innovative projects and consciously utilizing renewable resources—such as our new solar power systems and the electrification of our vehicle fleet—we actively demonstrate how industry and sustainability can go hand in hand. Sustainable business practices lay the foundation for our long-term corporate success.”
